Obituary for Saundra "Sunnie" Shaulis

Saundra “Sunnie” Rieckers Shaulis passed away at the age of 74 on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley. She was born on December 30, 1943 to Howard and Elizabeth (Johnson) Rieckers in Colville, Washington.
Saundra was raised in a Christian upbringing and used her guidance as a beautician and barber for the military enlistees and their families. While she lived in Yelm, WA, she owned her own beauty shop. On April 4, 1999 she married John “Dutch” Gordon Shaulis in Raeford, North Carolina. The couple enjoyed 19 years of love and companionship.
Her hobbies included: quilting, sewing, golf, walking on the beach, holding hands, ceramics and Shanghi rummy with her family. Sunnie made wonderful personalized quilts for her family members, as well as, caring ceramics for special occasions. She was the historian of the family and told many stories of our ancestors and kept us all informed of our families lives. She shared her faith, love, caring and honesty with all of us which made a big impact on anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She was a member of the Phillipi Presbyterian Church in Raeford, NC and the New Life Christian Center in Yelm.
Saundra is survived by her husband John “Dutch” Shaulis; father, Howard Rieckers; sons, James “Jim” McDonough, Jeffrey “Jeff” McDonough, Jason Michael McDonough; daughter Jennifer Elizabeth McDonough; step-son, Mykle Shaulis Sr.; step-daughter, Krystyna M. Shaulis; sister, Sharron M. Looney; and 21 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth A. Johnson.
A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Sunnie on Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at 1:00PM in the Kern Funeral Home Social Room. At a later date she will be laid to rest in the Glass Front Niches at the Mount Vernon Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Sunnie to: American Cancer Society (
