Obituary for Richard Tjersland

Richard William Tjersland passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home in Skagit Valley on November 19, 2017 at the age of 85.
He was born April 30, 1932 to Henry Tjersland and Bernice Nelson. He grew up in Nebraska, later moving to the family farm his grandfather pioneered on Pleasant Ridge in 1899.
He Graduated from Nemaha High School in Nebraska, attended Peru State College, Skagit Valley College and Western Washington University graduating with a major in music and played the trumpet.
Served in the Navy from 1950-1954 aboard the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard CVA-31 during the Korean War. He served as part of the crash crew rescuing many pilots and saving countless lives; and later served in the Armed Services Police in Honolulu.
He was a professional truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He was part owner of Olympic Construction, member of local 302 I.O.U.E for 50 years; later retiring from Skagit Valley Trucking.
He sang in Skagit Valley Manskor, belonged to Sons of Norway-Abel Lodge in Conway, American Legion in Conway, member of Salem Lutheran Church and BPOE 1604 Mount Vernon. He enjoyed his travels to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Panama Canal, Hawaii and Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Tjersland and Bernice Nelson-Clark, brother Ben Tjersland, sister Deanna Clark, son Erik Tjersland, daughter Karen Jean Tjersland and grandson Matthew Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; son John (Beckie) Tjersland; daughters Diana (Doug) Martin; Sharon Cruse; Karen (Dean) Kisler; Anne (Casey) Stewart. Grandchildren Andrew, Timothy and Michael Martin; Anne, Travis and Taylor Cruse and Mya Hariri; Olen Tjersland, Stephanie, Brandon and Matthew Luvera, Katherine and Elizabeth Kisler; Preston, Ella and Lily Stewart and 12 great grandchildren who all loved him very much.
A special thank you to Hospice of the Northwest for all the great care provided to our Dad the last 5 months.
Funeral services will be held at Salem Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of the Northwest, 227 Freeway Drive A Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
