Obituary for Marlene Diane Smith

Marlene Diane Smith of Burlington, Washington, passed away at her home on December 26, 2017. She was born in Burlington on May 9, 1931 to H.B. “Brick” and Mildred (Johnson) Nelson. She graduated from Burlington High School and went on to Dental Assistant training. She married Elmer Jeffers and together they had a daughter, Cynthia. In 1957, Marlene married Tom Shane and adopted a son, Dan. Later she married Ken Smith. They made their home in Hawaii until Marlene returned to Burlington in 1991 to care for her aging parents.
Marlene loved to travel. Several times she went on adventures to Africa, once bungee jumping from Victoria Falls. She also traveled to Peru, and other places in South America, the Orient and Australia. She also enjoyed several riverboat cruses. Marlene was very creative. She handmade Christmas tree ornaments, painted in oils, and photographed scenery. She was a golfer and an avid bridge player. She maintained friendships with her bridge partner’s right up to the end.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Dan; a sister, Virginia and a nephew, Mark. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia; a cousin, Sue Kelder; three grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua and Virginia and 6 great grandchildren. Marlene’s ashes will be scattered in a special place in Hawaii. Memorials in the name of Marlene (Nelson) Smith may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 3120 McDougall Ave, Everett, WA 98201.
