Obituary for Marita Petersen

Marita Petersen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and a longtime resident of Skagit County, went to be with her Lord on May 1st, 2018 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
Marita was born in Manila, Philippines on November 3rd, 1953 to Ernesto and Carmen Garrido. She grew up in a diplomatic family, and her childhood was spent moving between various posts which included Seattle, San Francisco, Portugal and New York City. She attended City College in New York where she received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.
In 1973 while working a summer job, she met and worked alongside a man who fell head over heels in love with her. Marita and Fred Petersen were married on June 13th, 1976. In 1978 they packed all their worldly possessions into a Volkswagen Rabbit and headed to Seattle, Washington, exploring this beautiful nation as they went. They lived in Seattle, bought their first home in Cape Horn, Sedro Woolley and eventually settled down to raise their 2 sons in Mount Vernon, Washington.
Marita worked as a social worker, then a real estate agent before finding her true passion, teaching. She attended Western Washington University and earned her teaching degree, followed later by an M.A. in Education. She taught at Immaculate Conception, Little Mountain Elementary and Mount Baker Middle Schools in Mount Vernon. She loved her students and they loved her in return. Marita’s gift was making every one of her students feel special. She created a class culture where learning was exciting and everyone felt included.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Petersen of La Conner, mother Carmen Garrido of Manila, brother Paul Garrido of Boston, sister Aurora Szekielda of New York, sister Gigi Malkin of Dubai, son Jason (and Aarti) Petersen of Vancouver, son Jordan (and Amber) Petersen of Raleigh, and grandchildren Lukas, Alyssa, Brooklyn and Dylan.
Thank you to all her faithful friends and family who have been angels surrounding her. Please know how much your prayers, visits, gifts, cards, meals, texts, emails and phone calls sustained her spirit during this hard fight. Those of us who knew Marita well know that we have lost a bright light. As a good friend said ”She was so loved on earth, how much more in Heaven!”
A memorial will be held on Saturday May12th at 10AM at His Place Church in Burlington Washington. In lieu of flowers you can make donations to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (Pancan.org) Family and friends may sign an online registry and leave notes at www.kernfuneralhome.com.
