Obituary for James W. Whitlock

James W. Whitlock passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 in Burlington at the age of 68. He was born on May 16, 1950 in Pontiac, Michigan to Bill and Barbara Whitlock.
Jim grew up in San Diego, after his family moved there in 1957. He joined the Air Force, during the Vietnam era, while in college. During his time in the military, Jim was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, and enjoyed the area so much that he stayed, living in Alaska for 6 years after the service. He then moved back to San Diego and worked for General Dynamics. In January 1988 he married Cheryl (Cheri) Gorton O’Malley. In 1991 they moved to Washington. Jim continued to work in the aerospace industry, and worked as a QA Inspector at Boeing until his retirement in 2014. After retiring, he began converting his garage into a train layout where he had countless hours of enjoyment playing with his beloved toy trains.
Jim loved to combine his two favorite hobbies, trains and photography. He would share his love of both with anyone who wanted to chat about them. In addition to his toy train layout, he loved to go visit old live steam trains… both to ride them and also to chase them in order to get great pictures.

Jim was a member of Hub City Church in Burlington; IAM (International Association of Machinists) and NMRA (National Model Railroad Association).

His other hobbies included photography, science fiction, western history, computers and technology, movies and film. Most of all he enjoyed toy trains and chasing old steam trains with Cheri.

When Alzheimer’s hit, Jim faced his disease with a high level of courage and dignity. He fought to stay able as long as he could, and appreciated those who showed their care and love him with visits and lunch outings.

James is survived by his wife Cheri Whitlock; his sister Ann Whitlock; his Aunt Geneva Campbell and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Barbara Whitlock.

A memorial service for Jim will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, 1:00 PM at Hub City Church, 124 North Regent Street, Burlington, 98233.

The family would like to give special thanks to those charitable organizations that served and cared for Jim in practical and compassionate ways.
