Obituary for Douglas Philip Gibbs

Douglas Philip Gibbs, 68 years of age and long time resident of Skagit Valley passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, October 27, 2017. Doug was the son of William M. Gibbs and Lois M. Cook. He was born in St. Louis, MO on May 11, 1949. Doug took his first trip at 6 weeks of age traveling by train to Long Beach California with his Mother and big Sister as their family relocated. Doug was a beloved brother to his older sister Cynthia and younger sister Patricia.

Through High school Doug was a 4.0 student and Class President for two consecutive years. Doug graduated with Honors from Mendenhall High with the class of 1967. He married his first wife Jeaneen Antoinette Picconi in 1969 during which time he became a proud young Father to Brian(1969) and Julie(1972). He attended college and completed his roofing apprenticeship in a swift three years. Upon the completion of his Roofing Apprenticeship he was awarded the “Monier Raymond” Tile Award a highly recognized accolade amongst his peers. After fulfilling the stringent California Union requirements he joined the Union in 1967 and retired from the Union honorably in 1979. Throughout Doug’s early adulthood he frequently lived and worked in Alaska. A defining characteristic of Doug was his taste for adventure and thankfully, his work on the Alaskan Pipeline Installation Project provided just that.

In 1980 Doug made a big move to the small town of Lake Elsinore, CA. The years spent in Lake Elsinore were defining and pivotal points in Doug’s life, most notably, his marriage to his second wife Catherine DeAnn Lloyd and becoming a proud Father to Joshua James Pickard. Lake Elsinore is where he raised his family and where Gibbs Roof Company was originally established. In 1991, Doug traveled to Washington to Roof his Sister Cynthia and Brother in Law Bruce’s home, it was at this time that he fell in love with the area and moved his family to Anacortes, WA shortly thereafter. In 2001 he humbly embraced the Mount Vernon/Conway community and proudly called this home for 16 years. Washington was the perfect settling spot, as it gave way to a flourishing Roofing business as well as put all things nature at his back door. Doug’s passions spanned the spectrum, he enjoyed: his family's heritage and heirlooms, his career as a Roofing Contractor and Business owner, his Children and cherished Grandchildren, his home, his pets, fishing, hiking, boating, his vintage VW bus, backpacking, snowshoeing, traveling, antiquing, quality cars, and his dedication to his church community, the list goes on. He was a true lover of life.

Doug is survived by his son, Brian Jason Gibbs, his son and daughter in law Joshua James Gibbs and Heather Joy Gibbs and his Daughter and Son in Law, Julie Jeaneen Leverett and Eddie Wayne Leverett Jr. as well as his Grandchildren (in order of age) Tracy, Payton, Owen and Elliot.
